Dr. Jonathan Smith

 

Dr. Jonathan Smith is a professor in the Intelligence and National Security Studies program at Coastal Carolina University in Myrtle Beach, SC.  He created the Intelligence and National Studies program there in 2011 and it has grown to over 400 students and 6 full-time faculty members. 

 

Dr. Smith holds a doctorate in political science and a master’s degree in international studies from the University of South Carolina where he specialized in National Security Decision Making.  He also completed the Joint Professional Military Education curriculum at the Naval War College in 2009.  In addition to his work in academia, Dr. Smith served in the U.S. Navy Reserve for 23 years as an intelligence officer.  Retiring as a Commander, his last assignment was as the commanding officer for a joint service intelligence unit that supported U.S. Southern Command in Miami, Florida.  During his career, Dr. Smith also deployed overseas in support of operations in Bosnia, Kosovo, Iraq, and Afghanistan.

 

Within the field, Dr. Smith has been a member of IAFIE since 2012.  He steered the group that developed the certification processes that are used by IAFIE today, and he has served as the chair reviewing all intelligence courses and programs seeking IAFIE certification.  Dr. Smith’s recent scholarship has focused on issues related to the development of the field of intelligence studies, such as faculty qualifications and assessment structures.
