Dr. James Ramsay

 

Dr. James Ramsay is a Professor of Security Studies, Coordinator of the Homeland Security program, and the founding Chair of the Department of Business, Politics and Security Studies at the University of New Hampshire.  Prior to the University of New Hampshire, he created one of the nation’s first undergraduate programs in homeland security at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Florida, where he also founded the Department of Security Studies and International Affairs.  He has over 20 years of experience in public health, security studies, emergency management, and occupational and environmental health.

 

Dr. Ramsay was appointed by the U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services to serve on the Board of Scientific Counselors to the Director of the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health in the Centers for Disease Control, where he served for four years.  He now serves on this organization’s Institutional Review Board as well as its Disaster Research Institutional Review Board.  Dr. Ramsay serves as the inaugural Vice President for the Council of Academic Affairs and Research of the American Society of Safety Professionals in which he has also chaired the Education Standards Committee from 2006-18.  In addition, he currently serves on the Education Standards Committee for the International Society for Preparedness, Resilience and Security of which he is a co-founder and President.

 

Dr. Ramsay has been involved in education standards development in homeland security intelligence, emergency management and occupational safety for over 15 years.  He has advised several university programs and served as a Director on the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology Board of Directors for six years.  He also serves on the editorial and advisory boards for Homeland Security Affairs and the Journal of Homeland Security and Emergency Management.  He also co-founded and serves on the editorial and advisory boards for both the International Journal for Security, Preparedness and Resilience Education and the Journal of Human Security and Resilience. 

 

Dr. Ramsay’s current research involves the relationship between analytics, cybersecurity and intelligence.  His past publications, Introduction to Homeland Security and Critical Issues in Homeland Security: A Casebook, are both published by Routledge.  His latest text, Environmental Security: Concepts, Challenges and Case Studies, was published this spring by the American Meteorological Society.  A forthcoming publication Homeland Security: Theory, Concepts and Cases will be published by Routledge the winter of 2020.
